Moving To Your New Home Tips
By Oliver George
When moving to a new home, it is helps to have a checklist of things to do. This will help you go through the process less difficult. Below are tips on what to consider before moving to a new house.

Packing and the materials needed

Determine which items in the house not needed anymore or the things that can be disposed of. Dispose them by all means. It would just entail additional cost when you include them in the move. Then decide if you want to do all or some of the packing yourself or hire someone to do the packing for you.

Make sure you pack ahead of time. Dont cram! Pack at least one box a day. Then label them. It is recommended to spend on good quality packing materials. Packing materials like boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and packing paper have proven to be very useful. Determine the quantity to be bought. Pack one room at a time. This can make the unloading in the new home less arduous.

To prevent breakage, fragile items such as plates and pictures frames should be placed vertically in a box with lots of paper or cloth cushion.

Also, pack light materials in large boxes while heavy materials on small boxes.

Moving Your Vehicle

How far is your new home? You might want to consider hiring a professional car hauler to transport your car or cars. Sometimes it is cheaper this way than driving to your new home or even disposing your current car then buying a new one. There are shipping quotes available in the internet. It is better to have several quotes.

Keeping

your valuables

What are valuable to you? Make sure when you leave the house for your new home, valuables like documents, money and jewelry are with you in your car or in the airplane. Documents are very hard to replace. It would be more secure if they are with you than in the moving truck.

Coverage for damage or loss

There are two kinds of coverage that the mover can offer you.

First is the Basic Liability coverage. This is usually 60 cents per pound of load. This is standard and would mean no additional cost to you.

Second is the declared value coverage. This offers protection against loss or damages. The cost would depend on the declared value of the things to be insured. The value is based on the replacement value.

You can also check if there is a provision during a move in your homeowners insurance policy.

Hidden costs

The charges on long distance moves are regulated by the federal government. The charges are based on the weight of the cargo and the distance. Local move charging are simpler. It is usually based on labor time.

However, always ask if there are still extra charges not covered by the standard charging. This can be for extra heavy items such as piano, safe or riding lawn mowers, disassembly or reassembly of furniture or devices or a long walk from the truck to the house or stairs. Do a contract review and make sure no hidden cost will arise during billing.

Moving services contract

It might be a good idea to ask for a free on-site estimate before engaging with a moving company. There are many movers available. Get several online or phone estimates and 2-3 on-site estimates before choosing a mover. Make sure to mention all the items to be moved for an accurate assessment and price quotes, check for moving companies prices.

A written contract should include all the items to be moved, all costs and charges, delivery time, delivery address, phone numbers, insurance coverage and a total cost figure. Make sure that you have the same understanding as the mover. Read the contract especially the fine print as the hidden cost is usually in that section.

Moving day

Personally supervise their work. Make sure that you are there when they arrive. Make sure that everything is accounted for in the inventory list. Accompany the foreman of the moving crew as he fills out the inventory sheet and supervise the loading process into the moving van. Take a second look and make sure the inventory matches what are in the truck before signing the inventory list.

If you have covered all the bases, you can relax and enjoy the travel to your new house.
